If you’re traveling through Tanzania, there is one word you’re almost guaranteed to hear: pole.
Someone sees you carrying something heavy? Pole.
You’ve just finished a long journey? Pole kwa safari.
You’re hard at work? Pole kwa kazi.
You experience something difficult? Pole sana.
For English speakers, this can initially be confusing because pole is often translated as “sorry.” But that translation doesn’t fully capture how the word is used.
Pole Doesn’t Always Mean “I’m Sorry”
In English, saying “I’m sorry” can imply that you’ve done something wrong. Pole can serve a different purpose.
It can be an expression of sympathy or acknowledgment of someone else’s hardship, rather than an admission of responsibility. Swahili teaching materials describe expressions such as pole kwa safari, pole kwa kazi, and pole kwa ugonjwa as customary ways of acknowledging another person’s journey, work, or illness.
That’s why a Tanzanian might say pole after seeing you struggle even though they had absolutely nothing to do with what happened.
Pole vs. Pole Pole
Travelers should also know that pole and pole pole aren’t interchangeable.
Pole can express sympathy or compassion.
Pole pole means slowly or carefully.
If you’re climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, for example, you’re likely to hear pole pole as encouragement to maintain a slow, steady pace.
A Small Window Into Tanzanian Culture
Learning Swahili before traveling to Tanzania doesn’t mean you need to become fluent.
Sometimes understanding a single word can change how you interpret an interaction.
When someone says pole, they’re often doing more than translating an English phrase. They’re acknowledging your experience.
