We’re the sisters behind Butiama & Beyond, a travel company dedicated to introducing travelers to the beauty, people, and cultural heritage of Tanzania.
As Tanzanians, our connection to our country goes beyond its famous destinations. We want visitors to experience the warmth of its people, discover its traditions, and appreciate the everyday moments that make Tanzania special.
Recently, we attended the Ocala Travel Expo in Florida, where we had the opportunity to share our passion for Tanzania with fellow travel enthusiasts.
But one of the moments that stayed with us had nothing to do with selling a trip.
It was a simple act of kindness.
A Picture Worth Remembering
While attending the expo, we decided to take a few photographs to capture the experience.
Like many people traveling together, we were taking turns photographing each other.
Then someone noticed what we were doing and kindly offered to take a picture of both of us.
It was such a thoughtful gesture!
We hadn’t asked for help, yet someone took a moment out of their day to make sure we could both be in the picture.
Although it might seem like an ordinary interaction, it reminded us of something we value deeply in Tanzanian culture: hospitality.
Ukarimu: The Tanzanian Spirit of Hospitality
In Swahili, the word ukarimu refers to hospitality or generosity.
Hospitality is an important part of social life in Tanzania, where welcoming visitors, sharing meals, and showing consideration for others are widely valued traditions.
Visitors may hear the word karibu, meaning welcome, throughout their travels.
Whether someone is arriving at a family home, visiting a local community, or checking into an accommodation, welcoming others can be an important expression of respect and connection.
Of course, kindness isn’t exclusive to any one country or culture.
And that is precisely what made our experience in Ocala so meaningful.
Thousands of miles away from Tanzania, we encountered the same thoughtful spirit we appreciate at home.

One of the greatest benefits of traveling is discovering how much people from different backgrounds can have in common.
We may speak different languages, enjoy different foods, and celebrate different traditions, but simple values such as kindness, generosity, and respect often connect us.
Our experience in Ocala was a reminder that cultural exchange doesn’t always require a formal introduction or an organized cultural event.
Sometimes, it happens through a conversation.
Other times, it happens when someone offers to take your picture.
