There are moments on safari that you expect.
Watching a lion stalk its prey.
Seeing elephants cross the plains.

While exploring the Serengeti, we came across a zebra standing in the middle of the road.
At first, we assumed it was simply watching us or waiting for the rest of its herd.
Then we realized something unexpected.
The zebra had fallen asleep.
For a few peaceful moments, it stood completely still, unconcerned with our schedule or the day’s itinerary. It wasn’t rushing to the next destination or worried about what came next. It simply rested because that was what it needed.
It made us smile.
But it also made us think.
So many of us live at a pace that leaves little room to pause. Our calendars are full. Our phones rarely stop buzzing. Even vacations sometimes become another checklist of places to visit instead of moments to truly experience.
One of the most beautiful phrases you’ll hear while visiting Tanzania is pole pole.
Literally translated, it means “slowly, slowly.”
But its meaning goes much deeper.
It’s an invitation to enjoy the journey rather than rushing toward the destination. It’s a reminder that meaningful experiences often happen when we stop trying to control every minute.
Ironically, one of our favorite lessons in Tanzania didn’t come from a guide.
It came from a sleepy zebra.
Travel has a remarkable way of changing our perspective. Sometimes that happens during extraordinary moments, like watching the Great Migration.
Other times, it happens because an animal reminds us that rest isn’t something to feel guilty about.
