Start with these five easy Swahili phrases every traveler should know before visiting Tanzania.
- Habari — How Are You? 👋🏾
Pronunciation: hah-BAH-ree
One of the first words you’re likely to hear in Tanzania is habari.
Habari literally relates to “news,” but it is commonly used as a greeting, similar to asking “How are you?” or “How are things?”
You may also hear different versions depending on the situation or time of day.
For example:
Habari za asubuhi? — How is your morning? / Good morning.
But if you’re just beginning your Swahili journey, habari is a great place to start.
- Asante Sana — Thank You Very Much ❤️
Pronunciation: ah-SAHN-teh SAH-nah
You’ll probably use this one frequently during your trip.
Asante means “thank you,” while asante sana means “thank you very much.”
Use it to thank your safari guide after an incredible game drive, your driver, hotel staff, a restaurant server, a local artisan, or anyone who helps make your journey special.
A genuine “Asante sana!” accompanied by a smile can go a long way.
- Tafadhali — Please 🙏🏾
Pronunciation: tah-fah-DHAH-lee
Tafadhali means “please.”
It’s an important word to know when making a polite request.
Whether you’re ordering something, asking for assistance, or simply trying to communicate respectfully, adding tafadhali is an easy way to practice good manners in Swahili.

- Samahani — Excuse Me / Sorry 🤍
Pronunciation: sah-mah-HAH-nee
Samahani is another incredibly useful word for travelers.
Depending on the situation, it can mean “excuse me,” “pardon me,” or “sorry.”
Need to get someone’s attention?
Samahani!
Accidentally bump into someone?
Samahani!
Need to politely interrupt to ask a question?
You guessed it, samahani.
It’s a simple word you’ll be glad you learned before arriving.
- Karibu — Welcome 🤗
Pronunciation: kah-REE-boo
If you spend enough time in Tanzania, you’re almost certain to hear karibu.
It means “welcome,” and it perfectly captures the warmth and hospitality travelers often experience throughout Tanzania.
You might hear:
Karibu Tanzania! — Welcome to Tanzania!
Karibu Zanzibar! — Welcome to Zanzibar!
And here’s another useful tip: if someone says “Asante” to thank you, you may hear “Karibu” in response, where it can function much like “you’re welcome.”
